James Lee “Jim” Bonk, 87, a resident of Folsom, Calif., passed away peacefully with his family at his side on the evening of Aug. 15, 2022. Jim will be greatly missed by his family and friends, but he lived a wonderfully full life that we know he truly loved and enjoyed.

James was born Sept. 11, 1934, in Deadwood, S.D., son of the late Avis Etta Bailey and Guy Johnson (Jack) Bonk. The family moved to Oregon for a year before then moving onto a small farm in southwestern Idaho where Jim spent his pre-teen years. Amongst his farm duties Jim raised and sold chickens. In 1945 the family moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where Jim delivered newspapers and worked for a gardener through his high school years.

After graduating from high school Jim took a job with McDonnell Douglas Aircraft, where he worked in the sheet metal fabrication shop. A year later he transferred to the Engineering Department as a draftsman. Jim held several positions over the next 35 years in the Engineering Department before retiring in 1989.

Before his retirement, he lived an active and fulfilling life with his family in their Lakewood, Calif., home. Jim loved to work from his home garage developing his woodworking skills. He became a true artisan in woodworking over his lifetime, making much of the furniture for their home. Jim had a long career playing in various men’s amateur fast and slow pitch softball leagues, where he played catcher.

In retirement Jim pursued his dream of living his life in a mountain community. He purchased 10 acres of land in the town of Lewiston. There he met his future wife, Billie Jo, and together they set out to design and build their dream home. They were married in 1991, after which they both lived pursuing their retirement passions in their Goose Ranch Road home.

Jim is survived by his wife Billie Jo, his daughter Diane Petersen, his son David Bonk, his son-in-law Robert Petersen, and his daughter-in-law Jamie Vohs.

James was laid to rest in the cemetery in Newcastle, Calif.
